Does your child complain of being unable to sleep?

Take her away smartphone an hour prior to bedtime.

Ditto that the TV, the video games, the tablet computer, the computer and the rest of it in.

Then perhaps throw that stuff to the garbage.

A new article from the Canadian Medical Association Journal warns that children will be getting less sleep than previously, and it is partially due to their monitor usage.

Sleep deprivation has been detected in younger and younger children, a terrible sign given the way the mind develops throughout childhood. A pediatric sleep specialist at McGill, Reut Gruber, is quoted at the CMAJ post, pointing out the exact same insufficient sleep difficulties long related to teens is currently showing up in younger children. According to her research, Children aged 10 and 11 still desire between eight and 11 hours of sleep each night — but just half get so much sleep.

That sounds obvious.

The sleep problem raised in the CMAJ article is simply one of the issues associated with a lot of screen time. There are various posts about how much screen time is actually bad for kids, and recently, dozens more about the way the moguls of silicon valley are increasing their children tech-free.

That is right — the men and women who create addictive games, programs and most of the rest of this steer clear in regards to their own children. Worrisome.

The two Bill gates and Steve Jobs are proven to have restricted their kids’ access to technologies. Last summer, CBS noted that children that are heavy users of video games, social networking, TV and cellphones are more vulnerable to depression and stress.

Speaking of stress, we have not even got to the link between cellphones and brain cancer. Never mind.

Do your kids a favor and switch off the TV set. Experts advise that it is best to not allow anyone below the age of 2 create a connection with any display. Read books made from paper, and do not use your telephone (or have the TV on) during family meals.

Experts also suggest that if it’s possible to put off the entire cellphone/tablet/etc situation until a kid is 12, you are far ahead of the game. And likely residing in Ittoqqortoormiit.
